To make a gathered puff sleeve, follow these steps:
Cut your fabric: Cut a rectangular piece of fabric for the sleeve that is about 1.5 times your arm circumference, and the length you desire for the sleeve.
Hem the fabric: Fold the top edge of the fabric over by about 1 cm and sew it down to make a hem.
Gather the fabric: Thread a gathering stitch along the bottom edge of the fabric, leaving long threads at either end. Pull the threads to gather the fabric until it is the same circumference as your arm.
Attach the sleeve to the garment: Pin the gathered edge of the sleeve to the armhole of the garment, matching the center of the sleeve to the shoulder seam. Sew the sleeve to the garment, making sure to distribute the gathers evenly around the armhole.
Finish the sleeve: Hem the bottom of the sleeve by folding it under and sewing it down.
Note: You may also want to add elastic to the top of the sleeve to create a snug, puffed look.
